About Al Forno

The Story

Where Fire Meets Tradition

Al Forno — Italian for "from the oven" — opened its doors in Providence, Rhode Island in 1980, and has since become one of the most celebrated dining destinations in New England.

Perched on the scenic waterfront of South Water Street in historic downtown Providence, Al Forno pioneered the wood-fired grilling techniques that transformed American Italian cuisine. Our signature grilled flatbread — now a hallmark of the restaurant — remains a must-order for first-time visitors and loyal regulars alike.

Every dish that emerges from our kitchen carries the weight of tradition and the spark of creativity. We source the finest seasonal ingredients, craft our pasta by hand, and treat the wood-fired grill as the heart of our culinary expression.

The interior speaks for itself: stone walls that have absorbed decades of laughter and conversation, a fireplace that warms winter evenings, marble surfaces that invite lingering. Al Forno is not merely a restaurant — it is a place where memories are made, evening after evening, year after year.

What Defines Us

Our Philosophy

Wood-Fired Mastery

Our grills have been burning since 1980. The wood fire imparts flavors no other method can replicate — char, smoke, and a depth that defines Al Forno.

Seasonal & Fresh

Our menu follows the seasons, not a calendar. What is freshest and finest guides every preparation, from the first asparagus of spring to the heartiest winter pasta.

Fine Dining, Warm Welcome

Elegance without pretension. We believe fine dining should feel like being invited into someone's home — beautiful, relaxed, and deeply nourishing.
